Celebrating Legacies and Inspiring Change: The “Portraits of Power” Launch at the South African State Theatre

On 9 March 2026, the South African State Theatre in Pretoria transformed into a space of reflection, art, and empowerment as the Charlotte Mannya-Maxeke Institute (CMMI) hosted the official launch of Portraits of Power.

Held in honor of International Women’s Day, the event served as a centerpiece for this year’s commemoration of the 125th Graduation Anniversary of Charlotte Maxeke. As the first Black South African woman to earn a university degree (B.Sc. from Wilberforce University in 1901), Maxeke’s legacy remains the ultimate blueprint for women who lead, build, and transform.

A High Tea with a Higher Purpose

Under the elegant theme of High Tea, the session was far more than a social gathering. It was a “powerful showcase of art and storytelling,” designed to historicize the narratives of women who have often been sidelined in traditional history books.

The afternoon focused on three core pillars:

  • The Portrait Exhibition: A visual journey through the faces and stories of women who have pioneered change in their communities.
  • Ceremonial Commemoration: A solemn and celebratory tribute to the “Mother of Black Freedom,” Charlotte Maxeke, reflecting on her impact as a scholar, activist, and leader.
  • Women & Youth Empowerment: Bridging the generational gap by using the lessons of the past to inspire the leaders of tomorrow.

Art as a Vessel for History

The Portraits of Power initiative by CMMI uses art not just for aesthetic beauty, but as a tool for “Art with Purpose.” By documenting these stories, the institute ensures that the strength and resilience of South African women are preserved for future generations.

“We are not just celebrating history; we are making it by ensuring these stories are never forgotten.”

Looking Ahead

As the 125th-anniversary celebrations continue throughout the year, the CMMI remains committed to its mission of empowering women and youth through education and cultural preservation. Today’s event was a reminder that when we honor the women who came before us, we pave a clearer path for those who follow.
