As South Africa embarks on its most ambitious consultative process since the end of apartheid, a new voice has been chosen to lead the conversation. Ms. Qhamisa Tengile has been officially elected as the Spokesperson for the National Dialogue Steering Committee, following a rigorous election process administered by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
The announcement came after a high-stakes strategic planning workshop held from March 6 to March 8, 2026. Tengile’s appointment marks a pivotal moment for the National Dialogue, signaling a commitment to a communication strategy that is as grounded as it is professional.
The Face of a New Era
In her new role, Tengile sits at the heart of the National Dialogue Management Committee. While the process is led by Co-Chairpersons Mr. Romeo Qetsemani and Ms. Tania Van Meelis, Tengile is the bridge between the high-level steering structures and the South African public.
She inherits a mandate of immense weight: translating complex policy discussions into a narrative that resonates with citizens from the boardrooms of Sandton to the rural villages of the Eastern Cape.
Leadership in Good Company
Tengile will work closely with the Eminent Persons Group (EPG), which features veteran negotiator Roelf Meyer, former parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko, and scientist Siya Xuza. At the weekend retreat, the EPG provided an “unwavering message of support” to Tengile and her colleagues, emphasizing that the success of the dialogue rests on its ability to communicate its integrity to the nation.
“The Dialogue must create space for South Africans from all walks of life to participate meaningfully,” noted NEDLAC Executive Director Makhukhu Mampuru. For Tengile, this means turning that “space” into a visible, accessible platform for every citizen.
What’s Next for the Spokesperson?
With the leadership now settled, Tengile is expected to hit the ground running.
As the National Dialogue enters this active phase, all eyes—and ears—will be on Qhamisa Tengile to see how she shapes the story of South Africa’s next great transition.
