TREDA Reflects on Historic G20 South Africa Presidency, Calls for Grassroots Engagement

The Township & Rural Economic Development Agency (TREDA) has issued a public statement celebrating the conclusion of the G20 South Africa Presidency 2025, which marked the first-ever G20 Summit hosted on African soil. TREDA applauds the leadership of the President of South Africa, His Excellency, President Cyril Ramaphosa, for embracing the African philosophy of Ubuntu, which reaffirmed solidarity, equality, and sustainability as shared global imperatives.

The G20 South Africa Leaders’ Declaration is highlighted as a strong commitment to multilateral cooperation, human rights, peaceful conflict resolution, and inclusive development across all nations.

🌍 Elevating the Voice of the Global South

TREDA acknowledges the G20 South Africa Presidency as a moment that redefined the global development agenda and successfully elevated the voice of the Global South.

TREDA was a key contributor to the Presidency, ensuring that the critical priorities of township and rural economies, youth voices, and social development were meaningfully incorporated into the global dialogue through active participation in multiple G20 Engagement Groups.

🤝 Key Engagement Group Contributions

TREDA’s involvement spanned several crucial platforms:

  • SU20 Engagement Group – Township Entrepreneurship Task Force: TREDA advanced the need for structural support, financial access, and market integration for township entrepreneurs. The agency ensured that the realities of the informal, micro, and small business economy were central to global policy discussions.
  • Y20 Engagement Group – Meaningful Youth Engagement Task Force: The agency championed the demand for youth representation, employment pathways, enterprise support, and innovation ecosystems, enabling young people to actively shape the future.
  • G20 Social Summit: TREDA participated in strengthening the social compact between citizens, government, labour, civil society, and business. The agency emphasized the crucial role of grassroots economies in fostering resilient and inclusive societies.

📢 A Call for National Dialogue

While celebrating this historic milestone, TREDA affirms that its work continues. In the spirit of Ubuntu, the agency is now calling on all South Africans, particularly township and rural Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs), to engage in the national conversation shaping the country’s collective future.

Citizens are invited to participate through the National Dialogue of South Africa (NDSA). Specifically, entrepreneurs in the informal, emerging, and small business sectors are urged to join the Small, Emerging and Informal Economy Sector of the NDSA. This sector is chaired by Ms. Qhamisa Tengile, CEO of TREDA.

“This is the platform where local realities meet national policy, and where meaningful change becomes possible through unified voices.”

✅ TREDA’s Enduring Commitments

As the G20 South Africa Presidency concludes, TREDA affirms its unwavering commitment to carrying forward its legacy. The agency stands ready to build the economies of tomorrow through partnership, dialogue, and dedication to inclusive growth.

The agency’s key commitments include:

  • The global development agenda.
  • Strengthening South Africa’s role in the Global South.
  • Advancing inclusive, people-centred economic systems.
  • Ensuring township and rural enterprises rise From Margins to Merit.
